“I would love to live like a river flows, carried by the surprise of its own unfolding.”
John O'Donohue
Ian works as a Developmental Companion to coaches and leaders - both individually and in small reflective practice groups.
He is part of the faculty for our Advanced Diploma in Vertically Developmental Coaching.
And is on the Global Board of the Association for Coaching International.
I work in an intimate way - in so far as possible within what philosopher Martin Buber called an I-Thou relationship with those with whom I work. Buber says a relationship built from this stance is characterised by ‘mutuality directness, presentness, intensity and ineffability’, It is my increasing experience that amongst many coaches and leaders there is a hunger for the depth of relationship, and commitment to unconditional acceptance that creates space for genuine inner work to be explored and carried out.
This work can take place in one or more of the following ways:
- On a one to one basis - usually meeting online monthly across an initial one year period. Inspired by Bill O’Brien’s insightful statement that ’the success of an intervention depends solely on the inner condition of the intervener’ these conversations seek to allow us to understand, communicate with and ultimately deeply love whatever condition we find showing up within ourselves. I limit myself to 10 one to one relationships starting each January - and several spaces open up each year,
- In the context of a Leadership Development Profile (LDP) debrief session, either on a stand alone basis. Or followed up with further coaching sessions if desired. The LDP has been a significant part of my own developmental journey and I would recommend it wholeheartedly.
- By joining a Developmental Journey group. Part developmental co-supervision, part mutual reflection, these are groups of four or five individuals, usually but not always coaches, I limit myself to hosting three of these groups each year and spaces become available from time to time.
- As a participant in the Harthill Advanced Diploma in Vertically Developmental Coaching. The faculty team, led by myself and Sian Lumsden run a bi-locational cohort each year, usually beginning in the autumn and if you would like to hear more about the programme we’d be delighted to meet with you and discuss it further.
Please email me at ian@harthill.co.uk if you're interested in any of the above.
