Relational Mindfulness - developing presence, awareness and embodied wisdom
hosted by Dr Emma Donaldson-Feilder and Liz Hall
Relational Mindfulness for Coaches is a pioneering approach which powerfully supports vertical adult development, amplifying the impacts of individual mindfulness, helping coaches and clients to develop, deepen and expand capacities such as complexity processing, perspective adeptness, relational complexity, and self-experiencing.
In the emerging context of growing polarisation, geopolitical uncertainty, and ecological distress and the rise of AI, the ability to build strong, conscious relationships is more important than ever. Relational Mindfulness for Coaches takes mindfulness to a whole new level, helping coaches, and clients, to be profoundly present, attune deeply, and foster the kind of human connection where deep understanding, insight, and transformation can naturally arise. A level of connection AI coachbot developers currently only dream of!
The way we embody authenticity, bring care, and act with courage in relationship directly influences the depth of insight, clarity, and transformation our clients can access. Relational Mindfulness brings the transformational power of presence, awareness and courageous compassion right into the heart of the relationship in the form of mindful dialogue and contemplation.
Mindfulness is well established as a means to develop vertically. For example, Petrie says (2015), “From a vertical perspective, the regular practice of turning inward and observing one’s own thoughts helps leaders observe the constant process of their own meaning-making.”
Relational Mindfulness helps us stay with relational heat experiences and turn towards ‘difficult’ feelings. It helps us be less reactive, and more open to other perspectives, listening deeply and avoiding othering. It helps us be more comfortable with paradox and ambiguity, and expand into a more systemic eco-centric meta perspective, amongst other benefits.
This programme offers the opportunity to delve into Relational Mindfulness during four half-day sessions over a period of 6 weeks. As well as experiencing transformational practices that help coaches become more grounded, present, and attuned in relationship, we will explore the emergence of embodied insight and wisdom in support of vertical development. In each session, we will engage in individual mindfulness and mindful dialogue. Between sessions, you will be supported to integrate the practices and learning into daily life and relationships and to buddy up with other participants to practice mindful dialogue together.
The facilitators, Emma Donaldson-Feilder and Liz Hall, recently published a book, Relational Mindfulness for Coaches: Enhancing Presence, Awareness, Wisdom, Compassion and Courageous Collaboration (Routledge, 2025). They will be using the book as the source of resources for this programme, so please buy a copy before the programme starts so that you can refer to it between sessions.
